April - June 2006
Aéroports de Paris providing its airports
with "green electricity"

04.04.2006

On 5 April 2006, Aéroports de Paris will be granted the AlpEnergie 25 green electricity certificate by Electrabel, a member of SUEZ Group. By suscribing to AlpEnergie 25 for its Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports, Aéroports de Paris will be supplied with 25% green electricity from renewable sources of energy.

Commercialized by Electrabel, a member of SUEZ Group, and based on the hydroelectric production of the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône in France, this contract will enable Aéroports de Paris to benefit from a certificate, granted by TÜV the German certification office, on the renewable origin of the green electricity supplied.

Aéroports de Paris handled 78.7 million passengers in 2005. With a city-like organization, the company consumes nearly 400.000 MWh of electricity at both Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle airports. This corresponds to the annual domestic consumption of a city of nearly 150.000 inhabitants.
As an example, the 4 runways at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and their taxiways are lit by 20.000 boundary lights.

By putting its consumption of « green » electricity above the objective assigned² to France for 2010 - 21% of the national consumption of electricity to be issued from renewable sources -, Aéroports de Paris concretely asserts its engagement in the struggle against the greenhouse effect.
The supply of 100 000 MWh of green electricity allows the company to avoid 7500 tonnes of carbon dioxide, calculated with respect of the average carbon content in the electricity produced in the country.

The benefice for the environment is doubled by an economic advantage for the company.  Out of the 6 European companies bidding to supply Aéroports de Paris sites with electricity, Electrabel, a member of SUEZ Group, presented the most competitive global offer.

This action is part of the environmentally sustainable growth policy adopted by Aéroports de Paris :
- The Group has cogeneration turbines at Paris-Charles de Gaulle allowing simultaneous production of heat and electricity with a high energetic yield,
- At Paris-Orly, an innovative approach has allowed to reduce the consumption of gas: the non recyclable waste is sent to the valorisation plant of the Marché d'Intérêt National (MIN) of Rungis. Part of the heat produced is sent back to Paris-Orly and allows a reduction of 1 000 Tep of gas.

Beyond its own sphere of activity, the ambition of Aéroports de Paris is to encourage the companies present on its sites to pursue their development with an ever growing attention to the environment.

In France, Aéroports de Paris is one of the most important airport systems to have voluntarily chosen to buy green electricity.

1 The main renewable sources of energy include biomass, wind power, photovoltaïc and solar thermic energy, hydro power and geothermy.
2 This objective has been assigned to France by the European parliament 2001/77/EC directive.
